Endodontics

New, modern dental techniques now make it possible to save damaged teeth. One of the techniques used is endodontic treatment, more commonly known as root canal therapy.

Root canal therapy can save a tooth with a pulp that is diseased or damaged. The pulp contains the nerves and blood supply of the tooth. Without a healthy pulp, the tooth will be lost.

After a thorough examination (including x-rays) the doctor will remove the diseased pulp tissue. The canals and pulp chamber are permanently filled with a material that prevents bacteria from reentering the tooth. In most cases, a permanent restoration (crown) is recommended to protect the tooth from breakage.
